Abstract
Background: Printing workers are vulnerable to chemical exposure used in their works. The chemical exposure comes from printing inks. Chemicals, particularly lead can affect hemoglobin levels. In addition to lead, hemoglobin levels are also affected by age, sex, tenure, smoking habits, use of PPE at work, diet, parasitic infections, and congenital diseases. Objective This study aims to identify the hemoglobin levels of newspaper printing workers in Denpasar. Method: It is descriptive research with the flow cytometry method. The research applied the automatic analysis of Sysmex XS-800. It involved a total of 30 respondents selected based on total sampling. The result showed that most respondents aged 26-45 years (85%) all male respondents (100%) most worked ≥1 years (90%) had smoking habits (50%) and did not smoke (50%) all respondents used PPE incomplete (100%). The research shows that only 1 respondent has a low hemoglobin level (5%). Then, a total of 18 respondents (90%) have a normal hemoglobin level. Normal hemoglobin levels were found at the age of 26-45 years (75%), male gender (90%) with long working ≥1 years (75%) of respondents did not smoke (50%), most of them had the behavior of using PPE not complete while working (90%). Low hemoglobin levels were found at the age of 26-45 years (5%) male gender (5%) with long working ≥1 years (5%), respondents had smoking habits (5%) and had behaviors of using PPE complete while working (5%). High hemoglobin levels were found at the age of 26-45 years (5%) male gender (5%) with long working ≥1 years (5%) of respondents had smoking habits (5%) and had incomplete use of PPE behavior when working (5%). Conclusion: The hemoglobin levels of newspaper printing workers are normal, and most of them comply with safety standards by wearing masks while working. Keywords: Printing workers, hemoglobin, lead
