Abstract
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DURATION OF SMOKING, SMOKING FREQUENCY, AND TYPE OF CIGARETTES WITH HEMOGLOBIN LEVELS IN ADULT MALE ACTIVE SMOKERS IN TUKADAYA VILLAGE ABSTRACT Background: Smoking is a common habit in society and may affect hemoglobin levels due to carbon monoxide exposure that inhibits oxygen binding by hemoglobin. Duration of smoking, smoking frequency, and type of cigarettes are suspected to be associated with hemoglobin levels in active smokers. Objective: To determine the relationship between duration of smoking, smoking frequency, and type of cigarettes with hemoglobin levels in adult male active smokers in Tukadaya Village. Methods: This analytical study used a cross-sectional design involving 96 respondents selected by consecutive sampling technique. Data were collected through interviews regarding smoking behavior and hemoglobin examination using the POCT method. Data were analyzed using Fisher’s Exact test. Results: Most respondents had normal hemoglobin levels, totaling 72 individuals (75%). Most respondents had smoked for 5–10 years, smoked 10–20 cigarettes/day, and used filter cigarettes. There was a significant relationship between duration of smoking and hemoglobin levels (p-value=0.021), smoking frequency and hemoglobin levels (p-value<0.001), and type of cigarettes and hemoglobin levels (p-value<0.001). Conclusion: Duration of smoking, smoking frequency, and type of cigarettes were associated with hemoglobin levels in adult male active smokers in Tukadaya Village. Lama merokok, frekuensi merokok, dan jenis rokok diduga berhubungan dengan kadar hemoglobin pada perokok aktif. Tujuan: Mengetahui hubungan lama merokok, frekuensi merokok, dan jenis rokok dengan kadar hemoglobin pada pria dewasa perokok aktif di Desa Tukadaya. Metode: Penelitian analitik dengan desain cross-sectional pada 96 responden menggunakan teknik consecutive sampling. Data diperoleh melalui wawancara perilaku merokok dan pemeriksaan kadar hemoglobin metode POCT. Analisis data menggunakan uji Fisher’s Exact. Hasil: Sebagian besar responden memiliki kadar hemoglobin normal sebanyak 72 orang (75%). Mayoritas responden memiliki lama merokok 5–10 tahun, frekuensi merokok 10–20 batang/hari, dan menggunakan rokok filter. Terdapat hubungan signifikan antara lama merokok dengan kadar hemoglobin (p-value=0,021), frekuensi merokok dengan kadar hemoglobin (p-value<0,001), serta jenis rokok dengan kadar hemoglobin (p-value<0,001). Simpulan: Lama merokok, frekuensi merokok, dan jenis rokok berhubungan dengan kadar hemoglobin pada pria dewasa perokok aktif di Desa Tukadaya.
