Abstract
NURSING CARE FOR INEFFECTIVE AIRWAY CLEARANCE USING ACTIVE CYCLE OF BREATHING TECHNIQUE (ACBT) IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS WITH ASTHMA AT CILINAYA WARD, RSD MANGUSADA Ni Kadek Elsa Pratiwi Nursing Professional Program, Poltekkes Kemenkes Denpasar Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract that triggers sputum hypersecretion, leading to ineffective airway clearance. A non pharmacological management that can be administered is the Active Cycle of Breathing Technique (ACBT) therapy to assist in mucus mobilization and clearance. This study aimed to determine the description of nursing care for ineffective airway clearance using ACBT therapy in pediatric asthma patients in the Cilinaya Ward at RSD Mangusada. The research method employed a descriptive design with a case study approach focused on a school-aged child. Data collection techniques included interviews, observation, and documentation over a 3×24-hour period. The assessment findings revealed that the child had been experiencing shortness of breath for three days prior to hospital admission, tachypnea (RR: 32 breaths/minute), wheezing, and an ineffective cough, thereby establishing the nursing diagnosis of ineffective airway clearance. The primary intervention provided was airway management integrated with the innovative ACBT therapy. The third-day evaluation showed that the outcome criteria were met: dyspnea subsided, sputum was easily expectorated, wheezing decreased, RR improved (25 breaths/minute), and oxygen saturation increased (97%). In conclusion, ACBT therapy is effective in improving airway clearance in pediatric asthma patients. Healthcare professionals are recommended to implement ACBT as an independent supportive therapy in pediatric nursing care.
