Abstract

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE NUMBER AND DURATION OF SMOKING AND TOTAL CHOLESTEROL LEVELS AMONG ACTIVE SMOKERS IN PADANGSAMBIAN VILLAGE ABSTRACT Background: Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) remain a major global health problem. Smoking habits, including the number of cigarettes consummed per day and the duration of smoking, may increase total cholesterol levels due to nicotine and other harmful substances. Objective: To determine the relationship between the number and duration of smoking and total cholesterol levels among active smokers. Methods: This analytic observational study used a cross-sectional design conducted from February to March 2026. A total of 96 active smokers were selected using purposive sampling. Total cholesterol levels were measured using the POCT method, and data were analyzed using the chi-square test. Results: Respondents who consumed more cigarettes per day tended to have higher total cholesterol levels. There was a significant relationship between the number of cigarettes consumed per day and total cholesterol levels (p-value < 0,05). However, no significant relationship was found between the duration of smoking and total cholesterol levels (p-value = 0,144). Conclusion: The number od cigarettes consumed per day is associated with total cholesterol levels, whereas the duration of smoking is not among active smokers in Padangsambian Village. HUBUNGAN JUMLAH DAN LAMANYA MEROKOK DENGAN KADAR KOLESTEROL TOTAL PADA PEROKOK AKTIF DI KELURAHAN PADANGSAMBIAN ABSTRAK Latar Belakang: Penyakit Tidak Menular (PTM) masih menjadi masalah kesehatan utama di dunia. Kebiasaan merokok, baik dari jumlah rokok yang per hari maupun lama merokok, dapat meningkatkan kadar kolesterol total akibat efek nikotin dan zat berbahaya lainnya. Tujuan: Mengetahui hubungan jumlah dan lama mengonsumsi rokok dengan kadar kolesterol total pada perokok aktif. Metode: Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analitik observasional dengan rancangan cross sectional pada Februari - Maret 2026. Sampel sebanyak 96 perokok aktif dipilih dengan teknik purposive sampling. Kadar kolesterol total diukur menggunakan metode POCT dan analisis dengan uji chi-square. Hasil: Responden yang mengonsumsi rokok lebih banyak per hari cenderung memiliki kadar kolesterol total yang lebih tinggi. Terdapat hubungan signifikan antara jumlah rokok yang dikonsumsi per hari dengan kadar kolesterol total (p-value < 0,05). Namun, tidak terdapat hubungan signifikan antara lama merokok dengan kadar kolesterol total (p-value = 0,144). Kesimpulan: Jumlah rokok per hari berhubungan dengan kadar kolesterol total, sedangkan lama merokok tidak berhubungan pada perokok aktif di Kelurahan Padangsambian.
