Abstract

Low birth weight babies are a global health problem worldwide. The risk of death in babies born with low birth weight is higher. The birth rate of babies with low birth weight at Sanglah Hospital Denpasar has increased from 2019-2020. One of the causes of low birth weight is the mother's body mass index before pregnancy. This study aims to determine the relationship between maternal body mass index and infant birth weight. This research is an analytic observational study. The population of this study were all mothers who gave birth to live babies in 2020 as many as 1033 people. The sample of this study was taken using simple random sampling as many as 88 people. The independent variable is the mother's body mass index, while the dependent variable is the baby's birth weight. The data collection instrument used the form of data collection. Test analysis using fisher exact with a significant level of 0.05. The results showed that most of the mothers with normal BMI gave birth to babies with normal weight 66 people (95.7%) and mothers with thin BMI gave birth to babies with low birth weight as many as 13 people (68.4%). The results of the analysis using Fisher's exact value of p = 0.000 (p <0.05) showed that there was a relationship between the mother's body mass index and the baby's birth weight. BMI before pregnancy is very important to prevent low birth weight.
