Abstract

Elderly is one of the age groups at risk of malnutrition, lack and excess nutrients. Elderly has decreased physiological function due to degenerative processes (aging) so that many non-communicable diseases appear, one of which is hypertension. This study aims to determine the relationship between sodium and potassium consumption with the degree of hypertension in the elderly at the Tresna Werda Wana Seranti Social Home Denpasar. The type of research used was observational with cross sectional research design. This research was conducted in April 2019 with the sample being elderly who were taken by purposive sampling, as many as 30 people. Data collection was carried out by interviewing questionnaires and measurements taken were weighing, height, food weighing, and blood pressure measurement. The statistical analysis used was Rank Spearman. The result of the study, the average sodium consumption of the sample is 1904.14 mg (more) with the results of the analysis there is no significant relationship between sodium consumption and the degree of hypertension in the elderly (p = 0.448). The average consumption of potassium samples is 577.77 mg (deficit) with the results of the analysis there is no significant relationship between sodium consumption and the degree of hypertension in the elderly (p = 0.823). The conclusion of this study is that there is no correlation between sodium and potassium consumption with hypertension in the elderly.
