Abstract
ABSTRACT Cesarean section (CS) is a surgical delivery procedure performed based on specific indications to ensure the safety of both mother and baby; however, its rate continues to increase. This study aimed to describe cesarean section deliveries based on maternal characteristics and medical indications at Lewoleba Regional General Hospital, Lembata Regency, in 2025. This research employed a quantitative descriptive design with a retrospective approach using secondary data obtained from medical records. The sample consisted of 369 mothers who underwent CS, selected using total sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis in the form of frequency distributions and percentages. The results showed that the majority of mothers who underwent CS were aged 20–35 years (71.27%), multiparous (53.12%), had a secondary level of education (37.94%), and were housewives (75.88%). A total of 43.36% had a previous history of cesarean section. The most common medical indication was premature rupture of membranes (23.04%), followed by malpresentation (21.14%), oligohydramnios (14.91%), and prolonged labor (11.38%). In conclusion, the incidence of cesarean section is more strongly influenced by medical indications rather than maternal characteristics. Maternal characteristics mainly reflect population distribution, while the clinical condition of the mother and fetus is the primary factor in determining the decision to perform cesarean section.
