Abstract
Hypertension is a chronic disease that requires long-term treatment to prevent complications such as stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure. One of the psychological factors that may influence medication adherence is coping mechanisms. Adaptive coping mechanisms can help patients manage stress related to their illness, thereby improving adherence to treatment. This study aimed to determine the relationship between coping mechanisms and medication adherence among hypertensive patients at UPTD Puskesmas I West Denpasar in 2026. This study employed a quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 84 respondents were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using the Brief COPE questionnaire to assess coping mechanisms and the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) to measure medication adherence. The results showed that most respondents had adaptive coping mechanisms (46 respondents; 54.8%). The majority of respondents demonstrated low medication adherence (37 respondents; 44.0%). The Spearman Rank test revealed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05) and a correlation coefficient of r = 0.377, indicating a statistically significant positive relationship with a weak-to-moderate correlation between coping mechanisms and medication adherence. It can be concluded that hypertensive patients with more adaptive coping mechanisms tend to have better medication adherence. Therefore, improving adaptive coping strategies may contribute to enhanced adherence to antihypertensive treatment. Keywords: Hypertension, coping mechanisms, medication adherence.
