Abstract

DESCRIPTION OF HEMOGLOBIN LEVELS AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN IN THE SECOND TRIMESTER AT SOUTH KUTA PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER ABSTRACT Background: Anemia in pregnant women remains a global health problem, with a worldwide prevalence reaching 35.5% according to WHO in 2023 and 27.7% in Indonesia based on the Indonesian Health Survey in 2023. During the second trimester of pregnancy, plasma volume increases by up to 29%, causing physiological hemodilution that decreases hemoglobin levels and increases the risk of anemia. Anemia in pregnant women may lead to impaired fatal growth, premature birth, low birth weight, and increased maternal and neonatal mortality. Objective: To determine the description of hemoglobin levels in second trimester pregnant women at south Kuta Public Health Center. Methods: This study used a descriptive observational design with a sample of 52 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Hemoglobin levels were measured using the Cyanmethemoglobin method with a Spectrophotometer Microlab 300 at a wavelength of 540 nm. Result: Based on the hemoglobin level measurements, the lowest Hb level obtained was 9.1 g/dL, the highest was 13.9 g/dL, and the average was 11.4 g/dL. The results indicate that the majority of pregnant women in their second trimester fell into the non anemic category, consisting of 41 respondents (78.8%). Meanwhile, mild anemia was found in 10 respondents (19.2%), moderate anemia in 1 respondent (1.9%), and no respondents were found with severe anemia. Conclusion: The majority of second-trimester pregnant women at south Kuta Public Health Center had hemoglobin levels within the normal range, although a small proportion still experienced mild and moderate anemia.
