Abstract

DIFFERENCES IN SPERMATOZOA QUALITY IN PASSIVE AND ACTIVE SMOKERS ABSTRACT Background: Both active and passive smoking have severe negative effects on the health of the lungs, heart, and other respiratory systems. Smoking also disrupts male reproductive health. One of the male reproductive organs particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of smoking is the testes, which function to produce spermatozoa. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the differences in spermatozoa quality between individuals who are active smokers and those exposed to passive smoking. Methods: A descriptive-analytic approach with a cross-sectional design was used. The research involved analyzing sperm samples from both passive and active smokers through macroscopic and microscopic examinations. Data analysis was conducted using the Shapiro-Wilk test for normality, followed by the Mann-Whitney test for comparative analysis. Results: Sperm quality in passive smokers, based on total sperm count, showed that 7 samples (77,8%) had normal values, with all (100%) displaying abnormal motility and morphology. In active smokers, 7 samples (77,8%) had normal sperm counts, with 44,4% showing normal motility, 55,6% abnormal motility, and all showing abnormal morphology. No significant differences were found in concentration, motility, or morphology between the two groups. Conclusion: The findings revealed no statistically significant differences in sperm concentration, motility, or morphology between passive and active smokers. Keywords: active smokers, passive smokers, sperm PERBEDAAN KUALITAS SPERMATOZOA PADA PEROKOK PASIF DAN AKTIF ABSTRAK Latar Belakang: Merokok aktif maupun pasif sangat berdampak buruk terhadap kesehatan paru-paru, jantung, dan sistem pernapasan lainnya. Dampak merokok mampu mengganggu kesehatan reproduksi pria. Salah satu organ reproduksi pria yang sangat rentan terhadap dampak buruk rokok adalah testis yang berfungsi untuk memproduksi spermatozoa. Tujuan: dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui adanya perbedaan kondisi kualitas spermatozoa pada perokok pasif dan perokok aktif. Metode: penelitian Deskriptif Analitik dengan rancangan Cross-Sectional. Identifikasi Makroskopis dan Mikroskopis sampel sperma perokok pasif dan perokok aktif. Data dianalisis uji statistik Shapiro Wilk, dilanjutkan Uji Mann whitney. Hasil: Kualitas sperma pada perokok pasif berdasarkan jumlah total sperma menunjukkan bahwa 7 sampel (77,8%) memiliki nilai normal, dengan seluruhnya (100%) mengalami kelainan pada motilitas dan morfologi. Pada perokok aktif, 7 sampel (77,8%) memiliki jumlah sperma normal, dengan 44,4% menunjukkan motilitas normal, 55,6% motilitas abnormal, dan seluruhnya menunjukkan morfologi yang abnormal. Tidak terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan dalam konsentrasi, motilitas, maupun morfologi antara kedua kelompok. Simpulan: penelitian ini adalah tidak terdapat perbedaan signifikan terhadap kualitas sperma antara perokok pasif dan perokok aktif. Kata kunci: perokok aktif, perokok pasif, sperma
