Abstract
Background: Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH) is an intestinal nematode that in its life cycle requires soil for ripening process so that workers who have direct contact to soil, especially brick makers, have a high chance to be infected by worms. Poor personal hygiene can facilitate transmission of STH infection. Based on primary data, brick craftsman personal hygiene in Banjar Pande, Tulikup village, Gianyar is still lacking. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the presence of STH worm eggs in the fingernails of brick craftsmen in Banjar Pande, Tulikup Village, Gianyar. Method: The study is using descriptive research, which was conducted in February - April 2019. The sample in this study was taken by purposive sampling. Data was obtained through examination to fingernails pieces using floating method on 30 samples. The level of personal hygiene was obtained through interviews and observations. Results: The result of research conducted on 30 fingernails samples of brick craftsmen in Banjar Pande, Tulikup village, Gianyar, 3 of the samples (10%) containing STH worm eggs with the prevalence of Trichuris trichiura (66.7%) and Ascaris lumbricoides (33.3%). Conclusion: Based on the research conducted, it can be concluded that there were 3 samples (10%) containing STH worm eggs and 27 samples (90%) containing no STH worm eggs. Keywords : soil transmitted helminth, brick craftsmen , personal hygiene Latar belakang : Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH) merupakan nematoda usus yang dalam siklus hidupnya membutuhkan tanah untuk proses pematangan sehingga pekerja yang berhubungan langsung dengan tanah khususnya pengrajin batu bata mempunyai peluang besar terinfeksi kecacingan.
