Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women. Chemotherapy, as a systemic therapy, can affect peripheral blood components, including platelets and Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), which reflect platelet activity and function. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between the frequency of chemotherapy and platelet count and MPV values in breast cancer patients at Bali Mandara Regional General Hospital. Methods: This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 30 post-chemotherapy breast cancer patients selected using consecutive sampling. Chemotherapy frequency data were obtained from medical records, while platelet and MPV data were obtained through complete blood counts using a hematology analyzer. Data analysis used the Spearman’s Rank correlation test. Results: Most subjects were aged 45–59 years (56.7%), and all subjects were female (100%). Normal platelet counts were found in 73.3% of subjects, while elevated MPV was found in 60% of subjects. Descriptively, low platelet counts were more common in the group with high chemotherapy frequency (>4 times). Conclusion: There is no an association between chemotherapy frequency and changes in hematological parameters, particularly platelets and MPV, in breast cancer patients at Bali Mandara General Hospital. Keywords: chemotherapy, platelets, MPV, breast cancer Latar Belakang: Kanker payudara merupakan salah satu jenis kanker yang paling sering terjadi pada wanita.
