Abstract
EFFECTIVENESS OF GREEN EXTRACTION VCO OF Euodia hortensis AS A REPELLENT AGAINST THE Aedes aegypti MOSQUITO ABSTRACT Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), which recorded 257,271 cases and 1,461 deaths in Indonesia in 2024. The use of synthetic repellents such as DEET poses health and environmental risks, prompting the need for safer, eco-friendly alternatives. Euodia hortensis contains active compounds including linalool and α-pinene known for their repellent properties, while VCO serves as a green solvent with drug delivery capability. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of green extraction VCO of Euodia hortensis leaves as a natural repellent against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. A true experimental design with posttest-only control group was used, comprising seven treatment groups (green extraction concentrations of 5% and 10%, ethanol extract concentrations of 5% and 10%, negative control, VCO control, and positive control) with four replications. Repellent effectiveness was assessed using the arm-in-cage method (WHOPES, 2009), and data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Games-Howell post-hoc tests. Phytochemical screening revealed alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins in the extract. All extract groups (green extraction concentrations of 5% and 10%, ethanol extract concentrations of 5% and 10%) and the positive control achieved 100% protection rate, while pure VCO control showed 84.89%. Kruskal-Wallis test showed significant differences between groups (p = 0.000), but no significant difference among extract groups (p > 0.05). Green extraction VCO of Euodia hortensis leaves at concentrations of 5% and 10% is highly effective as a natural repellent against Aedes aegypti, achieving 100% protection equivalent to DEET. Penggunaan repellent sintetis seperti DEET menimbulkan risiko kesehatan dan lingkungan, sehingga diperlukan alternatif yang lebih aman. Tanaman Euodia hortensis mengandung senyawa aktif linalool dan α-pinene yang dikenal sebagai repellent alami, sedangkan VCO berfungsi sebagai pelarut hijau sekaligus sistem penghantaran senyawa aktif. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengevaluasi efektivitas green extraction VCO daun Euodia hortensis sebagai repellent terhadap nyamuk Aedes aegypti. Penelitian menggunakan desain true experimental dengan posttest-only control group, terdiri dari tujuh kelompok perlakuan (Green extraction konsentrasi 5% dan 10%, ekstrak etanol konsentrasi 5% dan 10%, kontrol negatif, kontrol VCO, dan kontrol positif) dengan empat replikasi. Efektivitas repellent diuji menggunakan metode arm-in-cage (WHOPES, 2009), dan data dianalisis dengan uji Kruskal-Wallis dan uji lanjutan post-hoc Games-Howell. Skrining fitokimia mendeteksi alkaloid, flavonoid, dan tanin pada ekstrak. Seluruh kelompok perlakuan ekstrak (Green extraction konsentrasi 5% dan 10%, ekstrak etanol konsentrasi 5% dan 10%) dan kontrol positif mencapai daya proteksi 100%, sedangkan kontrol VCO sebesar 84,89%. Uji Kruskal-Wallis menunjukkan perbedaan signifikan antar kelompok (p = 0,000), namun tidak terdapat perbedaan signifikan di antara kelompok-kelompok ekstrak (p > 0,05). Green extraction VCO daun Euodia hortensis pada konsentrasi 5% dan 10% sangat efektif sebagai repellent alami terhadap nyamuk Aedes aegypti dengan daya proteksi 100%, setara dengan repellent komersial berbahan DEET.
