Abstract

EFFECT OF DEEP BREATHING EXERCISE ON PEAK EXPIRATORY FLOW (PEF) OF COPD PATIENTS IN EMERGENCY ROOM OF SANJIWANI PUBLIC HOSPITAL GIANYAR REGENCY ON 2018 ABSTRACT COPD is a combination of chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema. This disease may cause obstruction in the respiratory tract and cause difficulties during expiration resulting in decreased peak expiratory currents (PEF). PEF can be improved by giving deep breathing exercise. The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of deep breathing exercise on PEF in patients with COPD in Emergency Room of Sanjiwani Public Hospital Gianyar Regency On 2018. This type of research is quasy experiment with pre and post test design with control group design on 44 respondents selected by purposive sampling and grouped into treatment and control group. PEF checked by using peak flow meter. The result showed that the average of PEF before the exercise in the treatment group increased from 44,70% to 49,20% with p value in paired t-test 0,000 (α = 0,05). While the mean of PEF in control group increased from 44,67% to 45,06% but with p value 0,083. That means there is a significant influence of deep breathing exercise on PEF in the treatment group. The mean difference of these two groups was tested with Independent Samples T-Test which received p value 0,000. This shows that deep breathing exercise has an effect on PEF in COPD patients. Based on the above, it is expected that deep breathing exercise can be applied to COPD patients to increase peak expiratory flow so as to accelerate the patient's recovery.
