Abstract

FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH THE INCIDENCE OF CHRONIC ENERGY DEFICIENCY (CED) AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN A Study Conducted in the Work Area of UPT Puskesmas Ile Boleng, East Flores Regency ABSTRACT Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) in pregnant women, caused by prolonged energy and protein deficiencies, is clinically indicated by a Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) of less than 23.5 cm. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the global prevalence of CED ranges between 35% and 75%, contributing significantly to approximately 40% of maternal deaths. This study aims to analyze the factors associated with the incidence of CED among pregnant women at Puskesmas Ile Boleng, East Flores Regency. This was an observational analytic study utilizing a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 56 pregnant women selected through a purposive sampling method. Data were statistically evaluated using the Chi-Square test and Fisher's Exact Test as an alternative. The findings revealed that the prevalence of CED among pregnant women reached 44.6%. Bivariate analysis demonstrated significant associations between education level (p=0.002), family income (p=0.004), and dietary nutritional intake (p=0.000) with the incidence of CED. Conversely, maternal age (p=1.000), occupation (p=0.241), parity (p=0.497), and nutritional knowledge (p=0.446) showed no statistically significant correlation with the occurrence of CED. Inadequate nutritional intake, lower levels of education, and family income below the regional minimum wage (UMR) serve as the primary determinants of CED in the study area. It is recommended that the community health center optimize its supplementary recovery feeding program (PMT) and transition counseling methods toward hands-on cooking demonstrations. Furthermore, families are strongly encouraged to prioritize household expenditures toward highly nutritious yet affordable local food sources. Keywords: Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED), Pregnant Women, Nutritional Intake, Education, Income.
