Abstract

IMPLEMENTATION OF PECS (PICTURE EXCHANGE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM) METHOD IN AUTISTIC CHILDREN WITH VERBAL COMMUNICATION DISORDERS AT THE DISABILITY CENTRE DENPASAR CITY ABSTRACT Autism is a complex, pervasive developmental disorder where children experience abnormalities in social interaction, communication, and behavior. Autistic children have language disorders that cause children to experience verbal communication disorders. The aim of this research is to determine the implementation of the PECS method with autistic children with verbal communication disorders at the Denpasar City Disability Service Center. This research is descriptive research with a case study design. Data was collected through in-depth interviews and observations organized into nursing care and presented narratively. The results of the study showed that there was an increase in children's communication skills after being given nursing care by adding the PECS method to therapeutic measures. However, these results are not optimal; more time is needed to improve the verbal communication skills of children with autism. It is hoped that the results of this research can become a reference for speech therapy interventions for treating children with verbal communication disorders. Keywords : Implementation, PECS Method, Verbal communication, Autistic Children IMPLEMENTASI METODE PECS (PICTURE EXCHANGE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM) PADA ANAK AUTIS DENGAN GANGGUAN KOMUNIKASI VERBAL DI PUSAT LAYANAN DISABILITAS KOTA DENPASAR ABSTRAK Autisme merupakan gangguan perkembangan kompleks yang bersifat pervasive, dimana anak mengalami keabnormalan dalam interaksi sosial, komunikasi dan perilaku. Anak autis memiliki gangguan berbahasa yang menyebabkan anak mengalami gangguan komunikasi verbal. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui implementasi metode PECS pada anak autis dengan gangguan komunikasi verbal di Pusat Layanan Disabilitas Kota Denpasar. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif dengan desain studi kasus. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam dan observasi yang disusun dalam suatu asuhan keperawatan dan disajikan secara naratif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat peningkatan kemampuan berkomunikasi anak setelah diberikan asuhan keperawatan dengan menambahkan metode PECS dalam tindakan terapeutik. Namun, hasil ini belum maksimal, diperlukan waktu lebih lama untuk meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi verbal anak autis. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menjadi acuan intervensi terapi wicara untuk menangani anak dengan gangguan komunikasi verbal.
