Abstract

ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY TEST OF NEEM LEAF EXTRACT (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) AGAINST Propionibacterium acnes ABSTRACT Background: Propionibacterium acnes plays important role in causing acne. It has been reported regarding the resistance of Propionibacterium acne to several antibiotics. Neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) has been considered possesses a wide spectrum of biological properties including antimicroba and antioxidant activity. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of neem leaf extract against Propionibacterium acnes. Method: This type of research is a true experiment with one shot case study using the Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method with five concentrations of ethanolic neem leaf extract of 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30%, Cloramphenicol 30 µg as work control, and 96% ethanol as negative control. Result: The results showed that neem leaf extract was able to inhibit the growth of Propionibacterium acnes with an inhibition zone diameter of 10% is 16,8 mm, 15% is 17,9 mm, 20% is 18,4 mm, 25% is 18,5 and 30% is 19,6 mm. The One Way Anova test obtained p value (0.001) < α (0.05) showed that there are differences in the inhibition zone produced by each concentration. The LSD test results showed that the inhibition zone diameter at a concentration of 15%, 20% and 25% has no meaningful difference in the inhibition zone. Conclusion: It can be concluded that neem leaf extract has antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes and there are differences inhibiotin zone in the growth of Propionibacterium acnes at concentrations 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30% of neem leaf extract.
