Abstract

Oral cavity is one of the places in the body that contain highest diversity of microorganisms. Most common of the bacteria in dental plaque is Streptococcus mutans as the main cause of caries. Caries is a disease with the highest prevalence, and a major cause of tooth loss. Caries prevention can be done by mouth rinsing using plant extracts from beluntas leaves (Pluchea indica. L). Beluntas contains active compounds that have antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of mouth rinsing using ethanol extract of beluntas leaves to reduce the number of Streptococcus sp. colonies in dental plaque. This research is an experimental study with completely randomized with pre-post test control group design, sample sizes are 25 respondents and then divided into three treatment groups and two control groups. This research was conducted by: extract preparation, samples preparation, data collection, and data analysis using Repeated Measure to determine differences in the effectiveness of extracts beluntas leaves with positive and negative controls before and after getting treatment. The results of this study showed that there was a significantly decline of Streptococcus sp. colonies in dental plaque after getting treatment compared to before treatment with p =0.00 (p < 0.05), and there were no differences in effectiveness of mouth rinsing using extract ethanol of beluntas leaves in variant concentration to reduce the number of Streptococcus sp. colonies in dental plaque compared with the positive control, with p= 0.31 or p>0.05, so ethanol extract of beluntas leaves and positive control using chlorhexidine, are equally effective in reducing the number of Streptococcus sp. colonies in dental plaque. The conclution is ethanol extract of beluntas leaves can reduce the number of Streptococcus sp. colonies in dental plaque and no group differences in the effectiveness of the extract to reduce the number of Streptococcus sp., and the beluntas leaves can be used as mouthwash specially those who far from the public health service.
