Abstract

In order to reduce maternal mortality, prevention of postpartum hemorrhage is done by preventing the occurrence of uterine atony. In addition, post-partum mothers also feel uncomfortable when suffering edema on the perinealsuture. To prevent this, Kegel exercises needs to be given. This study aims to discover the efectivity Kegel excercises to prevent the occurrence of urine retention and edema of the perineal suture. The type of study is experimental using Post-test Control Group Design, with a total experiment sample of 32 people and control group of 32 people. Data analysis of the efectivity Kegel exercise to prevent the occurrence of urine retention and edema of the perineal suture uses the fisher exact test. The analysis results show that the Kegel exercise variable does not efective practically and statistically to the occurrence variable of urine retention, with p = 0.31 and RR = 0.33 (95% CI: 0.04 – 3.04). So does the perineal edema variable with p=0.21 and RR= 0.04 (95% CI: 0.08 – 1.91). Thus on post-partum mothers, given kegel exercises or not, the result is almost the same, that urine retention or edema on perineal suture does not occur. This is because that the handling of labor now is active and aggressive so as not to cause many complications. Researches’suggestion is that Kegel exercise is still given to the mother, not only to prevent post-partum urine retention and edema on the perineal suture but also to make post-partum mothers more fit and her body condition and posture recovers more quickly to the state as before pregnancy.
