Abstract
ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF LEGUNDI LEAF ETHANOL EXTRACT (Vitex trifolia Linn.) ON GROWTH OF Streptococcus mutans IN VITRO ABSTRACT Diseases caused by bacteria, especially Streptococcus mutans, are usually treated with antibiotics. However, there is a resistant bacterial to some antibiotics that have been common. Alternative treatment that can be used is legundi leaves as antibacterial. This study aims to find out how the antibacterial activity of legundi leaves ethanol extract (Vitex trifolia Linn.) on the growth of Streptococcus mutans study in vitro. The experimental type was true experimental with Completely Randomized Design using 5 treatment namely controls ie 96% ethanol, 30%, 50%, 70%, and 90% concentrations with 6 repetitions on each treatment and using chloramphenicol antibiotics as work control. The average inhibition of zone diameter on each treatment are 0 mm, 8.05 mm, 9.45 mm, 9.8 mm, and 10.9 mm. Kruskal wallis test showed that the value 0.000, so there is difference of growth inhibition zone of Streptococcus mutans in various concentrations of ethanol extract of legundi leaves and Mann Whitney test showed there isi differences of growth inhibition zone of Streptococcus mutans in each concentration except at concentrations of 50% and 70%. Based on the result, it can be conclude that the ethanol extract of legundi leaf with various concentrations have antibacterial activity which are classified as moderate. TERHADAP PERTUMBUHAN Streptococcus mutans SECARA IN VITRO ABSTRAK Penyakit yang disebabkan oleh bakteri khususnya Streptococcus mutans, biasanya ditanggulangi dengan pemberian antibiotik. Namun, pada saat ini timbul masalah yaitu bakteri tersebut resisten terhadap beberapa antibiotik yang telah umum digunakan. Alternatif pengobatan yang dapat digunakan adalah daun legundi sebagai antibakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana aktivitas aktibakteri ekstrak etanol daun legundi (Vitex trifolia L.) terhadap pertumbuhan Streptococcus mutans secara in vitro. Jenis penelitian yaitu true experimental dengan Rancangan Acak Lengkap menggunakan 5 perlakuan yaitu kontrol berupa etanol 96%, konsentrasi 30%, 50%, 70%, dan 90% dengan 6 kali pengulangan pada masing-masing perlakuan serta menggunakan antibiotik kloramfenikol sebagai kontrol kerja. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan rerata diameter zona berturut-turut dari masing-masing perlakuan yaitu 0 mm, 8,05 mm, 9,45 mm 9,8 mm, dan 10,9 mm. Berdasarkan uji kruskal wallis, hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya perbedaan zona hambat pertumbuhan Streptococcus mutans pada berbagai konsentrasi ekstrak etanol daun legundi secara in vitro dan uji Mann Whitney menunjukkan adanya perbedaan bermakna pada masing-masing konsentrasi kecuali pada konsentrasi 50% dan 70%. Simpulan dari penelitian ini yaitu ektrak etanol daun legundi dengan berbagai konsentrasi memiliki aktivitas antibakteri yang tergolong sedang.
