Abstract
ABSTRACT Asthma is chronic inflammation in the respiratory tract. In asthma patients, respiratory tract obstruction occurs which causes difficulty during expiration, resulting in decreased peak expiratory flow (PEF). PEF can be increased by giving pursed lip breathing exercise. Pursed lip breathing exercise is a breathing exercise with deep inspiration through the nose and active deep and long expiration with pursed lip. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of pursed lip breathing exercise on PEF in asthma patients in the emergency room of Klungkung Hospital. This type of research is a pre-experiment with one group pre post test design on 22 respondents who were selected by purposive sampling. PEF was checked by using a peak flow meter tool. The results of the study obtained the average PEF before exercise was increased from 48,20% to 50,68% with p value on paired samples t-test 0,000 (p value < α). Based on the result of these studies, it can be concluded that there is influence of pursed lip breathing exercise on peak expiratory flow in asthma patients. Based on this, it is expected that pursed lip breathing exercise can be applied to asthma patients to increase peak expiratory flow so as to accelerate the patient’s recovery. Keywords: Asthma, peak expiratory flow, pursed lip breathing exercise
