Abstract

Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) are among the major issues in healthcare services because they may increase morbidity, extend the duration of hospitalization, and decrease the quality of healthcare services. One of the primary routes for the spread of bacteria causing HAIs is the contaminated hands of healthcare workers, especially with pathogenic microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus. This study was conducted to identify the presence of Staphylococcus aureus on palm swab samples of healthcare workers at Puskesmas IV Denpasar Selatan based on age, gender, educational background, length of employment. This research applied a descriptive observational design involving 30 healthcare workers selected using a purposive sampling method. Data were collected through interviews, observation of hand hygiene compliance, and laboratory examinations using Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA), Gram staining, catalase testing, and coagulase testing to confirm the identification of Staphylococcus aureus. The findings revealed that most respondents were 30–39 years old, female, held a D-IV/Bachelor’s degree, had worked for more than 15 years, and demonstrated good compliance with hand hygiene practices. Laboratory identification indicated that the majority of palm swab samples were negative for Staphylococcus aureus; nevertheless, several samples tested positive, suggesting that bacterial contamination on the hands of healthcare workers was still present.
