Abstract
THE ANTIFUNGAL ACTIVITY TEST OF VIRGIN COCONUT OIL (VCO) AGAINST THE GROWTH OF Malassezia globosa ABSTRACT Background: The prevalence of dandruff worldwide reaches 50%, particularly among individuals aged 15 to 50 years. One of the causes of dandruff is the fungus Malassezia globosa. Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is reported to contain caproic acid, caprylic acid, capric acid, miristate, palmitate, stearate, oleate, linoleate, and lauric acid, which exhibit antifungal activity. Methods: This study aimed to assess the antifungal activity of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) against the growth of Malassezia globosa. The study employed a True Experiment with a Posttest Only Control Group Design. VCO was prepared in concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. Result: The results showed that the concentrations that inhibited the growth of Malassezia globosa were 75%, with an inhibition zone diameter of 9.01 ± 0.38 (moderate inhibition) and 100%, with an inhibition zone diameter of 11.13 ± 0.12 (strong inhibition). The antifungal activity of VCO extract is attributed to the active compounds, such as lauric acid, caprylic acid, and capric acid, which diffuse into the fungal growth medium and work by disrupting the fungal membrane. The Kruskal-Wallis test yielded a probability value (p) of 0.000, which is < α (0.05), indicating a significant difference in the inhibition zones caused by the antifungal activity of VCO against the growth of Malassezia globosa. Conclusion: In conclusion, Virgin Coconut Oil demonstrates antifungal activity against the growth of Malassezia globosa. Keywords: VCO, Antifungal, Malassezia globosa UJI AKTIVITAS ANTIJAMUR VIRGIN COCONUT OIL (VCO) TERHADAP PERTUMBUHAN JAMUR Malassezia globosa ABSTRAK Latar belakang: Prevalensi ketombe di seluruh dunia mencapai 50%, terutama pada kelompok usia 15 sampai 50 tahun. Salah satu penyebab munculnya ketombe adalah jamur Malassezia globosa. VCO dilaporkan mengandung asam kaproat, kaprilat, kaprat, mirustat, palmitat, stearate, olerat, linoleat, dan asam laurat yang memiliki aktivitas antijamur. Metode: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui aktivitas antijamur Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) terhadap pertumbuhan jamur Malassezia globosa. Penelitian ini adalah True Experiment dengan rancangan Posttest Only Control Group Design. VCO dibuat dalam variasi konsentrasi 25%, 50%, 75% dan 100%. Hasil: Hasil penelitian ini didapatkan variasi konsentrasi yang dapat menghambat pertumbuhan jamur Malassezia globosa adalah konsentrasi 75% dengan diameter zona hambat 9,01 ± 0,38 (kemampuan menghambat sedang) dan konsentrasi 100% dengan diameter zona hambat 11,13 ± 0,12 (kemampuan menghambat kategori kuat). Aktivitas antijamur ekstrak VCO disebabkan oleh zat aktif dari VCO seperti asam laurat, asam kaprila, dan asam kaprat yang berdifusi ke dalam media pertumbuhan jamur dan bekerja dengan cara merusak membran jamur. Uji Kruskal wallis diperoleh nilai probabilitas (p) 0,000, nilai tersebut < α (0,05) sehingga dapat dinyatakan terdapat perbedaan bermakna zona hambat yang disebabkan oleh aktivitas antijamur VCO terhadap pertumbuhan jamur Malassezia globosa. Kesimpulan: Simpulan penelitian ini adalah virgin coconut oil memiliki aktivitas antijamur terhadap pertumbuhan jamur Malassezia globosa. Kata Kunci: VCO, Antijamur, Malassezia globosa
