Abstract

Asphyxia is one of the biggest factors causing mortality in the first 7 days of life and morbidity where asphyxia can cause brain damage. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between preeclampsia and the incidence of neonatal asphyxia in newborns. This type of research is a correlation analytic study with a case control design. The study was conducted on April 29 - May 29, 2025 with a population of 1155 births. The sample used in this study was 83 cases and 83 controls that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The case group is babies born with neonatal asphyxia, while the control group is babies who do not experience neonatal asphyxia. The sampling technique uses a matching system, namely Sectio Caesarea delivery. The results of the study showed that the incidence of preeclampsia was 43.4%, the incidence of neonatal asphyxia was 50% and there was a relationship between preeclampsia and the incidence of neonatal asphyxia in newborns (p value 0.008 <0.05 and OR 2.456). This study is expected to be used as input to be aware of pregnant women who are diagnosed with preeclampsia and have risk factors for asphyxia in order to prevent neonatal asphyxia in newborns.
