Abstract

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE NUMBER AND DURATION OF SMOKING WITH TOTAL CHOLESTEROL LEVELS AMONG ACTIVE SMOKERS IN SOUTH DENPASAR AREAS ABSTRACT Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) continue to be the focus of health attention throughout the world. Risk factors such as smoking habits, examined by the increasing number of cigarettes smoked everyday and the duration of smoking, can lead to elevated levels of total cholesterol due to the cumulative effects of nicotine and free radicals. Purpose: To determine the correlation between the number and duration of smoking with total cholesterol levels in active smokers. Methods: This research used observational analytical method with cross sectional design, conducted from February to March 2024. 96 respondents smokers were selected as the research sample using purposive sampling technique, and total cholesterol examination was conducted using the POCT method. Data analysis is performed using chi-square test. Result: Shows that respondents who consumed >20 cigarettes had high total cholesterol levels as many as 10 people (38.4%) and respondents who consumed cigarettes >10 years had high total cholesterol levels as many as 12 people (18.5%). Conclusion: There is a correlation between the number of cigarettes consumed and total cholesterol levels and there is no correlation between the duration of smoking and total cholesterol levels in active smokers in South Denpasar Areas. Keywords: Smoking, Total Cholesterol, POCT HUBUNGAN JUMLAH DAN LAMANYA MEROKOK DENGAN KADAR KOLESTEROL TOTAL PADA PEROKOK AKTIF DI KECAMATAN DENPASAR SELATAN ABSTRAK Latar Belakang: Penyakit Tidak Menular (PTM) masih menjadi fokus perhatian kesehatan di seluruh dunia. Faktor risiko seperti kebiasaan merokok yang ditinjau dari semakin banyaknya rokok yang dihisap perharinya dan semakin lamanya merokok dapat menyebabkan peningkatan kadar kolesterol total yang disebabkan efek akumulatif dari nikotin dan radikal bebas. Tujuan: Untuk mengetahui hubungan jumlah dan lamanya merokok dengan kadar kolesterol total pada perokok aktif. Metode: Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analytic observational dengan rancangan cross sectional, dilaksanakan pada bulan Februari-Maret 2024. 96 responden perokok aktif sebagai sampel penelitian dengan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling dan pemeriksaan kolesterol total menggunakan metode POCT. Analisis data dilakukan dengan menggunakan uji chi-square. Hasil: Menunjukkan responden yang mengkonsumsi >20 batang memiliki kadar kolesterol total tinggi sebanyak 10 orang (38.4%) dan responden yang mengkonsumsi rokok >10 tahun memiliki kadar kolesterol total tinggi sebanyak 12 orang (18.5%). Kesimpulan: Terdapat hubungan jumlah batang rokok yang dikonsumsi dengan kadar kolesterol total dan tidak terdapat hubungan lama mengkonsumsi rokok dengan kadar kolesterol total pada perokok aktif di Kecamatan Denpasar Selatan.
